EXTRACTO: Según indica el Proyecto HEAR del US Geological Service del Gobierno Federal en el Estado de Hawaii (Hawaiian Ecosystem At Risk-HEAR) Anthropocentric concerns ("People problems")
--"E. coqui has a loud, piercing call that often disturbs people's sleep [nuestro énfasis] (calls are typically measured at 90-100 decibels at a distance of 0.5m [1.5'] from the frog). This same problem has been noted for other species of Eleutherodactylus introduced to areas outside their native ranges. Several populations of frogs have come to our attention as complaints from disturbed residents, visitors, or hotel managers [nuestro énfasis]. All of these have been for small choruses of frogs. Large choruses can be deafening but are restricted so far to a couple of nurseries and a few residential areas....If you enjoy peace & quiet, just imagine trying to sleep through this every night!!" [nuestro énfasis] --termina la cita. Aunque al puertorriqueño común nos parecería extraño, la realidad es que la población de coquíes en Hawaii ha crecido desproporcionadamente. En algunos sectores del archipiélago que aparentemente es casi imposible dormir tranquilamente. Localmente estamos acostumbrados al sonido del coquí, pero en nuestra Isla estos batracios tienen depredadores naturales que mantienen la población en un nivel aceptable para ser escuchada sin molestias al dormir. Lamentablemente, las islas de Hawaii no tienen esos depredadores naturales, por lo que los coquíes se han multiplicado desproporcionadamente, causando un real dolor de cabeza para los hoteleros, que aunque no son anti-ambiente, si ha aumentado en nivel de intolerancia al ruido que típicamente se escucha en estas islas.
Tomándolo jocosamente:
Posible estudio para los 8 millones de puertorriqueños a través del mundo (incluyendo la colonia en Hawaii):
1) ¿Padece de disturbios al dormir a causa del coquí?
2) ¿No se ha quedado usted en un hotel por causa de un coquí?

"Many species have survived at the expense of others...why not the coqui...?
I am also not sure as to how loud a chorus of Coquis are, as to cause
discomfort and sleepless nights for the residents and tourist of Hawaii
where they feel they must get rid of the Coqui. If discomfort is the reason
for eliminating the Coqui from Hawaii then there is much cause for concern
for our Coqui."

Aloha to all of our Puertorican brothers and sisters all over the world. This is to talk a little about what the US Government is trying to do to what many
consider to be the greatest symbol the small island of Puerto Rico have: The Coqui. We have read and listen to many arguments about what this little frog is doing to both the eco-system and most important (to some) the people who get disturbed by its enchanting sounds. To us it is hard to understand that one. Well after some thought we have some ideas and/or opinions about this whole thing. Lets petition that all of the coqui be put in or around the same area, hotel, etc. By doing that you would be creating a home away from home for countless Puertoricans who travel to Hawaii each year. We know that would be impossible but it is just a thought. Tell me which Puertorican would complaint about going to sleep while being serenated by that oh so familiar sound? We live here in Hawaii and now that we are aware of the existence of our little friend in the Hawaiian islands you can be sure that we will stay in the hotel were the Coqui is the loudest.
At the same time this issue is spreading now more than ever and Puertoricans in the island are hoping to do the same as we are: Get to stay in a hotel were included in the price is the benefit of going to sleep while listening to such a familiar sound as the Coqui. Dear Friends- we have been following the plight of the Coqui here in
Hawai'i and we are pleased that you have made your support for the frogs
known
Hawai'i has been killing "alien" species - pigs, deer, goats, mongooses -
utilizing cruel traps, snares, shooting from helicopters, poisons...and now
they want to kill frogs -the environmentalists want to kill everything
which is introduced (except themselves, of course)
Animal Rights Hawai'i has been urging the government to implement humane
non-lethal controls, but so far we have been unsuccessful.
You might find this article from the (09.04.01) NY Times of interest
If you can provide us with more material on the Coqui, we will use it to
defend them.

A aquellos que dicen que el coqui no molesta es por que sencillamente no lo han tenido cerca de la ventana de la habitacion. yo soy un Puertorriqueno y eh vivido toda mi vida aqui asi que no tiene nada que ver con costumbre por lo menos yo apoyo a los hawayanos, los coquies son una maldita plaga. En cuanto a mi cada vez que uno me molesta simplemente lo mato y cadad vez que veo uno cerca de la ventana tambien. Asi que aquellas personas que no les guste mi comentario lamentablente esta es mi forma de pensar y si no les gusta no se lo coman.
Bueno,Creo q los hawayanos estan muy mal porque el coquise significa para el Puertorriqueño un simbolo muy importante y para nosotros el sonido no los molesta.Los coquies en Puerto Rico estan en peligro de extincion y ahora los hawayanos se antojan de matarlos estos dias mire el periodico y alla estan intercambiando los coquies por iPods!!

Javi porque no te matas tu mismo o mejor aun, porque no dejas que un carro te pase por ensima a ver como te sientes despues de ser aplastado no tienes compacion por los mas peque~os que tu osea, canto de abusador eres puertorrique~o y matas a los tuyos, ps sinceramente te puedes largar para otro pais.
Que lastima que un puertorrique~o piense eso sobre los coquies ...asi que vete para otro pais que no los escuches y que no los tengas que matar,en puerto rico tambien ay una gran "maldita" plaga de iguanas para que sepas --voy contigo antonio
